September 4, 2010
MoMA
PS1's historic Warm Up music series begins July 3 and will take place every
Saturday through September 4. This highly anticipated outdoor
series celebrates its twelfth year of exposing audiences to the best in
experimental music and live bands, performances, and DJs. Coinciding with the
annual Young Architects Program, this year's Warm Up will merge with a new
courtyard installation, Pole Dance,
created by the architectural firm Solid Objectives - Idenburg Liu (SO - IL).
Taking the stage for ten consecutive Saturdays over the
summer, Warm Up 2010 will highlight performances by a diverse group of musical
artists, including Barcelona-based Delorean, whose sound fuses their native
Spanish Balearic beat with Mediterranean influences and sunny indie rock;
Swedish electronic pop duo Air France, in their first-ever performance in the
U.S.; ?uestlove, Animal Collective, and Ratatat spinning live DJ sets; and
gender-bending urban musicians Big Freedia and DJ Rusty Lazer, hailing from the
New Orleans Sissy Bounce street music scene, giving live performances. In the spirit of the current exhibition Greater New York, Warm Up 2010 will also
engage the city as specific site, by incorporating New York's
downtown avant-garde with Peter Gordon's Love of Life Orchestra and a live
performance given by Peter Zummo of his legendary album, Zummo with an X.
This year for the first time, Warm Up will feature
interdisciplinary collaborations between musicians and artists. On July 24, an
entire Warm Up Saturday will be devoted to showcasing music performances involving
artists participating in Greater New York,
including Emily Roysdon, whose band MEN will perform live, and Kalup Linzy, who
will give a live performance set with his ensemble The Sweet, Sampled, and LeftOva, activating simultaneously the architectural
Warm Up space and the museum's interior.
This year's Warm Up takes a new curatorial direction. The program was conceived by a curatorial committee who, with their wide
spectrum of experiences in the music and performing arts fields, will generate
a unique blend of genres, ranging from hip hop to R & B, disco to soul,
indie pop to experimental orchestration, and electronic to New Orleans street
music. Selected by MoMA PS1 Director Klaus Biesenbach, the committee includes
Dean Bein, head of True Panther Sounds; Kris Chen, head of A & R at XL
Recordings; Robin Carolan, of 20 Jazz
Funk Greats and head of Tri Angle Records; Jonathan Galkin, manager and
cofounder of DFA Records; Ronen Givony, founder of Wordless Music and music
director for Le Poisson Rouge; and Brandon Stosuy, senior writer for Stereogum and contributing editor for The Believer. Seva Granik, independent
curator, supported the curatorial committee as stage and bookings manager. The Warm Up curatorial committee includes the
support of Eliza Ryan as external advisor.
Generous
funding for Warm Up 2010 is provided by agnès b. and by The Junior Associates
