The painter Delacroix said that one should draw quickly enough to be able to capture the figure of a man falling from a window before he hits the ground. I began painting helicopters and camels over seven years ago. It became apparent that painting large formats in oil would not suffice in keeping up with the level of anxiety with which I was afflicted. So I turned to smaller ink drawings, repeating the same size over and over, becoming well aquatinted with the format and the subject. To begin with, I saw the helicopter as a self-portrait. It was an exercise in addressing a part of me that for years I refused to face in my work. Nowadays I like to think that I am the camel.
