1. Plywood: I start by ordering large quantities of furniture-grade or shop-grade plywood, that way I can get free delivery. I do shop around but my favorite place is Rosenzweig Lumber. It’s a totally old school New York lumberyard located in an industrial area of the South Bronx. It consists of several multi-storied buildings packed with every kind of plywood and lumber on the planet, and you can get free pencils and “I love wood” bumper stickers.
2. Laminates: My next stop is Manhattan Laminates in Midtown. I think its one of the biggest laminate stores in the world. If you’re obsessed with things like Formica, they pretty much have everything you’d ever want. Most people have no idea how extensive the world of laminates really is.
3. Carvable foam: A couple of times a year I drive about 100 miles to an undisclosed location in Pennsylvania to buy some “carvable foam.” The material is really expensive and the cost of shipping would make the price outrageous so I go to pick it up myself. The last time I made the trip, I made an illegal right turn and got a ticket, which sort of defeated the purpose.
4. Glow-in-the-dark paint: I do a lot of shopping online, usually for hardware and tools. My favorite online store is Lab Safety Supply. They have cool looking safety goggles and the best glow-in-the-dark paint around.
5. Screws, nails, wood glue, epoxy, contact cement, acetone, denatured alcohol, wood filler, picturewire, sandpaper, saw blades, drill bits, router bits, pneumatic staples, foam brushes, polyurethane, etc. Everyday I inevitably run out of something so I walk up to the local family-owned hardware store. It’s called Goldshole and Garfinkel but I call it “The Golden Hole.” They usually have exactly what I need so I don’t have to go to the big bad box stores like the Home Depot.
